Bonifacio – Meetings for the reuse of treated wastewater on the Mediterranean coastline & Launching of the RE_GEN Project
Bonifacio, a sustainable development laboratory city
Bonifacio, an ancient citadel at the southernmost tip of Corsica, has a winter population of 3,200 people and welcomes around 2 million tourists during the summer months. Its mayor, Jean-Charles Orsucci, has succeeded in making it a true laboratory for sustainable development in the Mediterranean Sea.
What was left to do was getting the word out to facilitate the establishment of a location dedicated to this major issue for the Mediterranean Sea, on the Montlaur site in the heart of the Haute Ville.
Since 2018, the town has been seeking authorizations to extend the reuse of its treated wastewater to uses other than watering the Sperone golf course.
The Chances Conseil proposal
Demonstration by example – Taking advantage of a specific problem to demonstrate the coherence of the sustainable development approach implemented by the town of Bonifacio.
Chances Conseil has worked on:
- Establishing a partnership between the town of Bonifacio and the NEEDE Organization, which is behind the ODYSSEO project. Supported by the President of the French Republic, this project aims to create a network of sites around the Mediterranean Sea that are emblematic of the ecological transition, and that are also spaces for mediation, research and training.
Linking RE_GEN to ODYSSEO will give it greater visibility and enabling it to benefit from the experience acquired by NEEDE. - Design and host a Mediterranean Sea event on the theme of reusing treated wastewater to showcase Bonifacio’s exemplary actions and thinking.
In February, it was decided to organize a meeting in June dedicated to the reuse of treated wastewater.
Chances Conseil has drawn up the program for this meeting, so that it can be the subject of proposals leading to changes in French policies, and thus contribute to the Government’s objective of raising the rate of reuse of treated wastewater in France to 10%.
And to ensure that this practice is extended to all Mediterranean coastal communities, the “Bonifacio Declaration for the reuse of treated wastewater” has been launched with the support of MedCities and ICLEI.
Representatives from the Union for the Mediterranean and the United Nations Environment Programme’s Mediterranean Action Plan were invited to take part in the meetings, to make them commit to support the Bonifacio Declaration and associating them with the RE_GEN project.
